PENNSYLVANIA

June 29, 2002--Saturday

I have finally arrived in Pittsburgh, PA, and not a minute too soon! My hostess Jackie and her husband Done were loading their Jeep with plenty of boxes when the mailman handed my package to her and asked for a signature. I almost missed them. ah well, let the fun begin in the MT Washington area of Pittsburgh. And we are on the very top of Mt. Washington. What a view. Pittsburgh is simply lovely from here.

I am greeted by Hitty Anna and Hitty Beth and then we go off to another section of {Pittsburgh called Sheradan, where the Corace's are moving. But I get ahead of myself.

Two blocks from the Corace's home in Mt. Washington is Grand Avenue, where you have a spectacular view of the beautiful city of Pittsburgh. You can see where the two rivers come together to form the Point. I am told a Fort used to e at the point, but now there is only a museum and a block house, along with a beautiful fountain.

I had my picture taken at the 'new' house in Sheridan, along with Hitty Anna and Hitty Beth. We sat on the porch and talked while the others unloaded the Jeep. Whew! I was tired just watching!

Sunday was a day of rest. We spent the morning admiring the roses and petunias before the temperature rose to 96°!

1--July 2002, Monday

I accompanied Jackie into the city of Pittsburgh. I had a wonderful view of many tall buildings from the pocket on her blouse. What a contrast to see tall building and very old churches, side by side.

2--July 2002

It rained most of today. Everyone has been most pleasant though the humidity is high. I think there is much excitement in the air as the grand celebration for the 4th of July is near. Wonderful aroma of cookies and home-made bread is coming from the kitchen. yum!

4--July, 2002

The 4th of July is finally here.I have a new red, white and blue dress to wear and I can hardly wait for the fireworks.

Later---the fireworks were spectacular. We only had to go to the third floor of this house to see them. What a treat!

6--July 2002 Saturday

I went to a flea market at the end of the street today.I bought a small brass 'cricket' box made in India. One of our pictures shows our other 'treasures', which included 2 wooden cigar boxes, and a black wire couch.

7--July 2002 Sunday

The weather was very nice today. Hitty Anna, Hitty Beth and I spent most of the day in the flower garden sharing stories of our adventures and listening to the birds sing. I saw two beautiful red birds, cardinals, but no pop-in-jays. Maybe they exist only in Maine.

8--July 2002

Today was a great day for an adventure. We started at MT Washington, rode the Incline to the South side, close to the Station Square, and looked at the river boats. It was too early to take a ride, so we walked down to the point to see the Fort Pitt museum and Block House.

We then walked uptown to see Market Square where the Pittsburgh Plate Glass buildings are. They take up an entire city block, I think, and are mostly glass on the outside. Very impressive. Although Pittsburgh has many tall buildings there are many wonderful gro-flower gardens interspersed throughout. What a refreshing surprise!

We ended our sightseeing by taking a bus back to Sheridan.

9--July 2002

Another day of rain. It was a good day to catch up on my sleep. I think the family dog, Bailey, had the same idea.

10--July 2002 Wednesday

Where has the time gone? It's time to pack up my belongings and get ready for a new adventure. Pittsburgh was a beautiful city to visit. I think I should like to visit again some day!

Hitty Alice, (at Jackie Corace's in Pittsburgh, PA.)
