Hitty Gertrude Bell's Narrow Escape
from the Dead Letter Office

Hitty Gertrude Bell was taken to the mini-PO just as they closed for the day. Well, since the man mailing her for his wife had made friends with the post office worker there, a very nice older lady, she went ahead and took the box and said she would send it out the next day. Unfortunately, this dear lady had a slight car accident on the way home that evening and didn't get in to work until 3 days later! They didn't open the PO until the next day, and the temp didn't understand what was supposed to happen with the box containing Hitty Gertrude Bell!

When Miss Letty (as we call her) got back to work, there sat poor Hitty Gertrude Bell - but her Delivery Confirmation Receipt and my husband's money were nowhere to be found. Miss Letty, bless her heart, stuck another Delivery Confirmation ticket on her, paid for the shipping out of her own pocket, and sent Hitty Gertrude Bell on her way!

When my husband went in to check to see if she was back at work yet, she told him the story! He reimbursed her even though she insisted it wasn't necessary. The next time he went in, she told him that the register had come up $14+ over and gave him his money back! It's a good thing Miss Hitty Gertrude Bell is an adventurous sort, is all I can say! I hope that is the last of her postal trauma, though.
