Don't worry if the rugs curl as you are crocheting.
We will be starching the rug to make it lay perfectly flat.

Small Rug with Shell Edging
longrug3

I used verigated crochet cotton with this rug.
Hook Size: #7 steel hook (a smaller or larger hook will make a smaller or larger rug)
Crochet cotton: #10 (a smaller or larger weight size will make a smaller or larger rug)

Ch 24, turn
Row 1
-- 1 sc in second chain from hook, sc across (22 sc) ch 2 turn.
Row 2-- Sc across, ch 3, turn (22 sc)
Row 3-- 1 dc in top of previous sc, dc across, ch 2, turn
Row 4-- 1 sc in top of previous dc, sc across, ch2 turn.
Row 5-- sc across, ch 3, turn
Rows 6--end Repeat rows 1--5 until desired width is reached. Do not end off.

Edging:
In the bottom of the ch 3 space, put 1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, turn corner. In corner, place one sc.

*In each bar (from previous ch 3 or dc) put a shell stitch (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc) and between the sc rows place 1 sc.*
Repeat between * * until you reach the corner. In the corner, place one sc, and then continue with the * * until you reach the second corner. Repeat above action until you reach your starting point. End off, and weave thread end in.

Starching the Rug
longrug

To make your rug lay flat and perfect, you will need a can of spray starch, straight pins, and a piece of cardboard or styrofoam. (I use a small box)

1. Starting at the upper corners, place a straight pin in each. Try not to over-stretch the rug, because this will cause distortions. When doing the smaller rug with the shell edging, alternate down the sides and place the pin in the top of each shell. When you have gone down both sides, pin the top and bottom, again alternating between the top and bottom. (Don't do all of one side and then all of another side, it distorts the rug).

2. Check the rug to make sure it looks exactly like you want the finished rug to look. Check to make sure there are no overstretched places, which can cause points. Check to make sure you are as square as possible, and have not made a distorted square.

3. Once you are satisfied that the rug is perfect, spray heavily with the spray starch. Set aside until dry. Remove pins.

You will see that the rug lays perfectly flat, and retains its shape, yet is not stiff.

For the fringed rug, repeat the above instructions. Make doubly sure you do not pull the sides too tightly on this one, because it will create points down the sides. After spraying, smooth the fringe in one direction, untangling if needed. Once this rug is dry, clip the fringe to the desired length.

Long Rug with Fringed Ends
longrug2

I used verigated crochet cotton with this rug.
Hook Size: #7 steel hook (a smaller or larger hook will make a smaller or larger rug)
Crochet cotton: #10 (a smaller or larger weight size will make a smaller or larger rug)

chain 47, turn
Row 1-- 1 sc in second ch from hook. sc across (45 sc) ch 2, turn
Row 2-- sc across, ch 2, turn.
Row 3-- sc across, ch3, turn
Row 4-- dc across (45 dc) ch 2, turn
Rows 5-17---Repeat rows 1-4 three times (or to desired width)
Rows 18-19-- sc across, ch 2, turn
Row 20--sc across, end off. Leave thread about 2" long for fringe (will be trimmed shorter after starching).

Fringe:
Cut a length of thread twice the lenght of your arm. Duble it over.Use your crochet hook to pull a (doubled) loop of this through the end. Pull the cut ends of the thread through this loop. Cut off thread about 1" to 2" from end of rug. Repeat across the the rug. Do the same for the other end. Do not trim your fringe yet, you will do that after starching the rug.
